The principal of their school doesn't allow use of magic within school premises so Alex, together with her brother Justin (David Henrie) and best friend Max (Jake T. Austin) must pass themselves off as human while trying to get through high school. However, this proves to be more difficult than she imagined when her long-lost wizarding cousin, Justin comes into town for a visit. In order to stay in the U.S.A., Justin and Max pretend to be Justin's cousin and a friend named Alex, respectively. Due to not having a wizarding family, they ask an American wizard school called Waverly Place for help. At first they don't believe that they can pass as kids from Waverly Place but they give them a chance instead of putting them through a lot of trouble, so they accept their request and turn Alex's family's secret into a cover up. After her aunt comes from England for vacation, Alex realizes that what she thought she knew about her family isn't true at all. And then she gets to know that her family is more complicated than she originally thought. She also realizes that Max is not her friend at all, especially after he asks if he can do magic in the school. She goes home to ask for help from her aunt but her mom refuses to give them their ""cousins"" back until they have attended the senior prom together. Alex at first refuses to attend the prom with Max but then changes her mind when she discovers that he has great powers that can help them defeat Voldemort. Together they are able to defeat Voldemort after Apparating into his lair, where their spells weaken his army of evil mutants by removing their magical cloaks, causing them to melt into dust. In the end the Russo family goes back to London to live with their aunt, uncle and cousin to remain safer from Voldemort. They then tell Justin that they took a year off to study in England. And then after having fun riding a double decker bus to school, Max departs from Waverly Place for home.
